Google Sketchup 7 on Ubuntu 9.04 Linux
Hi there!
I just installed Google Sketchup 7 with wine on Ubuntu 9.04 and it works!
But I have to say, there are some minor "bugs" you have to take care of, to get it up an running nice.
1. First make sure you are using the WhineHQ Ubuntu repositories. That will ensure, that you have a pretty recent version of the actual wine release on your system. In the normal multiverse repository the wine build is relatively outdated version 1.0.1 as of today. In the winehq repositories you will have version 1.1.27 (as of today).
Refere to this HowTo to set up the repositories.
After installing the repositories you can update to the newer version or directly install the new version, If you did't had wine already installed before (see the mentioned HowTo for details).
2. Get Sketchup7 for Windows from here: http://sketchup.google.com/intl/en/download/gsu.html
3. Run the downloaded .exe with wine.
wine GoogleSketchUpWEN.exe
You will get something like this:
... go ahead and finish the installation, by clicking throug the dialogs.
4. Refere to this page and set the registry settings for the OpenGL display.
5. At first start check the checkbox for not showing that dialog on startup (because sketchup crashes when it does).
On my machine with an Nvidia Graphics card it runs fine until now... :-)
greetings
Christian

Works for me, but a couple of clarifications needed
Nice tutorial - thanks!
Just to clarify: in Step 2, you should probably say "You will get something like the screenshot below - go ahead and run the install." I was left wondering how I was going to set the registry settings without that! However, it seems that as Sept. '09 at least, Step 4 isn't needed as I couldn't see any key relating to OpenGL.
HI, thanks for the comment. I
HI,
thanks for the comment.
I added a sentence like you suggested, to finish the installation before proceeding to step 4.
According to the settings in step 4, I think this is related to some setup configs of ubuntu e.g. hardware configuration (grafic card vendor, driver version etc) and may not necessary for everybody. But at least I needed to do this step on my System with an Nvidia GeForce 7200...
